Roughly half the size of Alaska, Namibia is located in Southern Africa between Angola and South Africa, with the South Atlantic Ocean to the west. The fishing industry has made an impressive recovery after years of decline, thanks to new government measures promoting and monitoring the conservation and use of Namibia’s marine resources. Until recently, pastoral farming was the primary agricultural activity, with beef, mutton and goat meat the main products. While independence ended international sanctions applied during South African rule, and Namibia now has access to world markets, the rural majority is barely able to eke out a living even in non-drought years.
