Design Guide for Your Domain

Knowing how to design a website is an important skill in today's digital world. People today often need a website, whether it is for a company, a school project, a personal blog, a charity, or just for fun. In the past, creating a website was a job for only specially trained designers and programmers. However, now there are plenty of programs and online tools that allow users to create websites with minimal technical knowledge. Here we'll examine the different aspects that are involved in planning and making a website.

Web Page Layout

Layout refers to how all the components of the site are placed within a page. This might involve navigation bars, paragraphs of text, images, embedded videos and more. The overall goal when designing a layout is to make it easy for users to browse and read the content. Using plenty of white space helps to create a clean, uncluttered look. By maintaining the same or similar layout on every page, designers can help users to learn how to navigate the site and find information easily.

Website Navigation and Usability

Navigation includes the main navigation bar as well as all of the links within the site. Most websites feature a navigation bar that runs along the top of the page, or down the side. It helps to use drop-down menus to group similar pages together and keep the navigation bar from becoming too messy. Although some people try to be creative with their navigation titles, this approach can make it confusing for users who are trying to find a specific page. Instead, stick with straightforward titles that clearly indicate what the page is about.

Color

A website's color scheme plays a crucial role in how visitors perceive the site. Flashy or gaudy colors can easily turn them off and send them fleeing. Keep in mind that a web page should be easy on the eyes. In general, dark text on a white or light-colored background is easiest to read. Think up a color scheme that will be used with the site's logo, navigation bar, buttons, and links. Remember to stay consistent with the use of color on the site to make it easier for viewers to browse each page.

Font and Typography

Using fonts online is very different from using fonts for printed documents. Unlike the latter, there are a much smaller number of fonts that are universally recognized throughout different web browsers and systems. This means that if a website uses a funky font, it may not display correctly on a viewer's browser. Some of the most common "safe" web fonts include Verdana, Times, and Arial. To use a special font for a header or design element, it is better to type out the text in an image editing program and save the file as an image. Many new designers make the common mistake of using a very small font size. While it does help to keep the design looking clean, it is very hard for viewers to read. A font size of 10 or 12 is usually acceptable for standard paragraphs.

Graphics, Images, Videos, and Animations

Rich media or multimedia are the bits of content that help to bring a website alive. They include clip art, photographs, illustrations, animations, and video clips. When creating multimedia always save it in a web-friendly format. This ensures that web browsers can easily read the files. It also saves the file in a compressed format so that the webpage does not take a long time to load. When using other people's content online, be sure to ask for permission or at least include a credit line and a link back to their websites.

Incorporating Ads

Placing online ads within a website is a great way to earn some passive income to pay the costs of maintaining the website. There are plenty of companies that pay website owners a small amount to place ads on their sites. Google Ads is one of the most well known types. Site owners earn money when people click through the ads on their pages. There are also various affiliate programs offered by reputable companies. For example, a book store's website might offer a selection of banner ads or buttons, along with a snippet of HTML code. Website owners can register with the store and then copy the code and a banner onto their site. A good way to find ads and affiliate programs is to look for stores that offer related goods and services that might be of interest to the site's viewers.
